General Information

Mission Statement: Bridges sponsors participatory development projects in which interdisciplinary teams collaborate with remote mountain communities in appraising local needs and tourism opportunities, and in designing and implementing plans compatible with those conditions.

Note: In order to keep costs to a minimum and also to allow for repeated updates, Bridges does not have a printed prospectus. Application forms should be printed from the linked pages. (See navigation bar at left.)

The Bridges program ran for the first time in Autumn 1999. Our fourth expedition ran from February 17 through May 28, 2003. The program included a week in Kathmandu, rafting on the Bhote Kosi, two months of research and volunteer work in Rolwaling, and participation in the Namche Conference.

Note: a waiver of program fees is offered to participants from Himalayan countries: Nepal,India, Bhutan, China,Pakistan, and Afghanistan.

Staff: Dr. Seth Sicroff is a specialist in Himalayan tourism. He has done field work in Nepal and China on grants from Harvard University and the Ford Foundation. Empar Alos Alabajos is an industrial engineer from Valencia, Spain.
